How to install the free gateway DVD

It has been asked several times on this forum since the beginning, if we could use two nic cards instead of our firmware in a Asus or Buffalo router, and of course the answer is yes.. None of us have had good reason to mess with it though, so it has been a side project that a few people have tinkered with and maybe got going, but not in widely distributable form... Until now..

I have been buried for a week working with Loren to finish this latest release, but I also have had time to twiddle my thumbs while we kick the program back and forth and he has it to do his thing.. We kick the ball back and forth until it is fixed...

During my waiting time for that, I got to messing with that "EasyHotSpot" CD.. I broke it down and analyzed it top to bottom.. Raphael that wrote that is actually one of our forum users in here.. He never talks in the forum, but I have spoken to him on the phone several times.. Very nice guy, and obviously very smart..

Anyway, The easyhotspot CD is just a ticket program, but I have stripped it down and turned it into a "Wireless Gateway Controller"... This means that it is a ChilliSpot Router in a PC.. You can put two nic cards in there and it will use one for the WAN and the other will become a Chillispot interface...

This is valuable for connecting full buildings that are already wired, or you can take any off the shelf router and put it in "Switch" or "Bridge" mode with DHCP turned off, and it will simply pipe the chillispot traffic over the LAN and out the wifi...

I also have already put in a wireless nic card and made it into an access point.. Very cool toy, and I am sure you guys will find good use for it..

Get the CD download here.. It is 685MB and it fits on a regular CD-R...

Click Here to download the Gateway DVD .iso file

It has the usual user names..

root / ifiw321

chuckoms / ifiw321

admin / admin

Admin user is for the web interface with an icon on the desktop that says "Config"... It is very self explanatory..

If your nic cards get their designations out of order from what you want, change them in :

/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

To make the machine reboot as new after you screw up the interfaces, delete the file:

/etc/tsrif

That is "first" spelled backwards... If that file exists, the system will not over write the persistent rules file.. If you delete that file, on the next reboot the system will reset all nic cards to new designations again..

I put in one nic card and boot it up.. That makes it assign to "eth0".. Then shut down and put in another nic card and boot back up.. Now this card will become "eth1", and so on.. To start over, clear the "/etc/tsirf" file and reboot again..

I found the info on how to switch to AP mode here..

This will be a powerful addition to our toolbox... Check it out and tell me what you think... I will make an improved version after we learn from it for awhile..

Enjoy it...
